From the first frame to the last name on the screen
you get mesmerized by Ghibli’s magic in a way that only the Japanese could do.
For those who know very little about this magnificent animation studio, here’s
a little bit about the history of one of the world’s most brilliant production
companies and some of its works.
Before the foundation of the studio in Tokyo, Japan,
June 1985, by a publishing company called Tokuma Shoten-, that used the budget to
produce the first feature by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki.
They had worked to Toey Animation and produced other titles, like Gulliver’s
Travel Beyond the Moon (1965) which the artist was Miyazaki, who developed an
entire new end to the movie in a remarkable and creatively way. His success was
recognized and the developing of his brilliant career had started. Some years
later, when a 1984 anime film directed by Miyazaki and produced by Takahata,
with Suzuki based on Miyazaka’s manga had a positive response a new sparkle
have appeared. The successful “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” evoked them
to give birth to the company for their next production (Laputa: Castle in the
Sky, which was released in 1986.). The studio was named after the Arabic word
that means "hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert" (in Japanese,
it’s pronounced jee-bu-ree) and just like the Italian Ca.309 plane used in the
WWII, also named Ghibli, it has “blown a new wind” but through the anime
Japanese production. The intention behind the birth of the studio got a result
even more fantastic than what was planned.
Nausicaä is widely known as Studio Ghibli’s first
production even though it’s a co-production between Tokuma Shoten, Hakuhodo and
Top Craft, that was released a year prior to the formation of Studio Ghibli.
Nevertheless, the title is often included in collections of the studio’s work.
The studio has produced a TV film, numerous short films and TV commercials as
well as 20 feature movies.
Since its creation, Studio Ghibli has enjoyed massive
success with many of its movies on both domestic and global markets, with nine
of their feature length movies amongst the twenty highest grossing anime movies
of all time. (1. Spirited Away, 2. Howl’s Moving Castle, 3. Ponyo,5. Princess
Mononoke, 6. Arrietty 7. The Wind Rises, 12. Tales from Earthsea, 14. From Up
on Poppy Hill, and 19. The Cat Returns).
All those great titles had success, however, Studio
Ghibli’s biggest one came out in 2001 with Spirited Away, written and directed
by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Toshio Suzuki.
It became the highest grossing movie ever released in Japan, as well as
being the first film to gross $200million before opening in the USA. The movie
received success and critical acclaim on the global market becoming the only
anime movie ever to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Although the master-mind Miyazaki is retired now
(working on his own manga projects), he states that his intention is not for
Studio Ghibli to end production with his retirement, instead, he wants to make
room for other anime writers and directors to emerge.
Howl no Ugoku
Shiro ハウルの動く城 - Howl's Moving Castle
Sophie, a girl employee in a hat shop, finds her life
thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome but
mysterious wizard named Howl. But after this chance, she is turned into a
90-year old woman by the vain Witch of the Waste. Embarking on an incredible
adventure to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle
where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed
fire demon named Calcifer.
As the true power of Howl’s wizardry is revealed, and
his relationship with Sophie deepens, our young grey-haired heroine finds
herself fighting to protect them both from a dangerous war of sorcery that
threatens their world.
Tonari no Totoro となりのトトロ - My neighbour Totoro
Satsuki and Mei, two young sisters, have moved with
their father into a new home in the country, while their mother recovers from a
illness in a nearby hospital. To their surprise, the younger soon discovers
that they share their home with some rather unusual creatures - forest
guardians, which one of them is our beloved Totoro. When trouble occurs, their
new friends will help them rediscover hope.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi 千と千尋の神隠し - Spirit Away
In a place that doesn't exist - something impossible
happens.
One of the most celebrated anime feature, comes the
Academy Award winning masterpiece, Spirited Away, from the genius Miyazaki.
Spirited Away
is a wondrous fantasy movie about a young girl named Chihiro who discovers a
secret world of strange spirits, creatures and sorcery. When her parents are
mysteriously transformed while eating in a very suspicious and quite abandoned
street food square, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to
free herself and return her family to the outside world.
Hotaru no haka: 火垂るの墓 - Grave of Fireflies
This hardship tale of war and innocence lost is told
in the aftermath of a World War II bombing, when two orphaned siblings, Seita
and Setsugo, struggle to survive in the Japanese countryside. In a very
delicate yet heart-breaking perspective, based on a part biographical story of
Akiyuiki Nosaka (famous writer which belongs to the “Generation of Ashes”
(Yakeato Sedai)), this anime shows how indifference from your own partisans is
even more vicious than the enemy raids, especially when it comes to those who
needs the most, children. The hunger, grief and desperation they go through
gets you hopeless about the world we live in.
Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta 天空の城ラピュタ
Laputa:
Castle in the Sky
An airship carrying Sheeta, a girl who has been
abducted by government agent Muska, is attacked by Captain Dola and her air
pirate sons who are in search of Sheeta's crystal amulet. In the resulting
struggle, Sheeta falls from the airship but her descent is slowed by a
mysterious power within the amulet. She safely lands in a small mining town
where she is discovered by a boy named Pazu, who takes her into his home to
recover. Pazu tells her of a mysterious floating island named Laputa which is
visible in a picture taken by his father. This is how this adventure starts,
clearly inspired by Gulliver’s Travel,
the “first” Ghibli production deserves your attention.
STUDIO GHIBLI: A MÁQUINA DE SONHOS
DA ANIMAÇÃO JAPONESA
Desde o primeiro frame até subir o
último nome na tela, somos hipnotizados pela mágica produzida pelo Studio
Ghibli de uma forma que somente os japoneses podiam fazer. Para aqueles que
sabem muito pouco sobre este magnífico estúdio de animação, aqui está um pouco
da história de uma das empresas de produção mais brilhantes do mundo e algumas
de suas obras.
Bem antes da fundação do estúdio em Tóquio,
Japão, em junho de 1985, a editora Tokuma Shoten investiu na produção do
“primeiro” longa de Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata e Toshio Suzuki. Os três
trabalharam na Toey Animation e produziram outros títulos, como Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon (1965), em que o artista que desenvolveu um
final alternativo (que foi para a edição final) para o filme de uma maneira
extremamente notável e criativa foi o próprio Miyazaki. Seu sucesso foi
reconhecido e o assim começou sua brilhante carreira. Alguns anos mais tarde,
quando um anime de 1984 dirigido por Miyazaki e produzido por Takahata, com Suzuki
baseado no mangá de Miyazaka, teve uma resposta de público positiva, uma
quimera surgiu. O bem-sucedido “Nausicaä do Vale do Vento”, os invocou a criar
um estúdio para a próxima produção (Laputa: Castelo no Céu, que foi lançado em
1986). O nome dado ao estúdio foi a palavra árabe que significa "vento
quente soprando no deserto do Saara" (em japonês, a pronuncia ficou como
jee-bu-ree) e assim como o avião italiano Ca.309, usado na Segunda Guerra
Mundial, também nomeado Ghibli, o estúdio "soprou um novo vento" nas
produções de anime no Japão. A intenção por trás do nascimento do estúdio teve
um resultado ainda mais fantástico que o esperado.
Nausicaä é conhecida como a “primeira”
produção do Studio Ghibli, mesmo sendo uma co-produção entre Tokuma Shoten, Hakuhodo
e Top Craft, lançada um ano antes da formação do Studio. No entanto, o título é
frequentemente incluído em coleções Ghibli. O estúdio produziu filmes para TV,
inúmeros curtas-metragens e comerciais de TV, além de seus 20 longas-metragem.
Desde a sua criação, eles têm desfrutado de
enorme sucesso tanto no mercado nacional como internacional de cinema, com nove
de seus filmes de longa-metragem entre os vinte filmes de anime de maior
bilheteria de todos os tempos. (1. A Viagem de Chihiro, 2. O Castelo Animado,
3. Ponyo, 5. Princesa Mononoke, 6. O Mundo dos Pequeninos 7. Vidas ao Vento,

Todas essas maravilhas tiveram sucesso, no
entanto o maior sucesso do Studio Ghibli veio mesmo em 2001 com A Viagem de
Chihiro, escrito e dirigido por Hayao Miyazaki, produzido por Toshio Suzuki.
Esse tornou-se o filme de maior bilheteria já lançado no Japão, além de ser o
primeiro filme a faturar US $ 200 milhões antes de abrir nos EUA. O filme recebeu
sucesso e aclamação da crítica no mercado internacional, tornando-se o único
filme de anime a ganhar um Oscar de Melhor Animação de Longa-Metragem.
Mesmo que o
brilhante Hayao Miyazaki esteja “aposentado” agora (trabalhando em seus
próprios projetos e mangás), ele afirma que seu desejo não é que Studio Ghibli
encerre suas produções junto a sua aposentadoria. Ao invés disso, ele deseja
que esse espaço esteja aberto para outros escritores e diretores de anime
surgirem.
Howl no Ugoku Shiro ハ ウ ル の 動 く 城 – O Castelo Animado
Sophie, uma garota que trabalha em uma loja de
chapéus, encontra sua vida revirada do avesso quando ela é, literalmente,
levada pelos pés por um bruxo muito bonito e misterioso, chamado Howl. Porém,
após esse encontro, é transformada em uma mulher de 90 anos pela vaidosa Bruxa
das Terras Abandonadas. Embarcando em uma incrível aventura para se livrar a
maldição, ela encontra refúgio no castelo mágico, onde conhece Markl, o
aprendiz de Howl, e um demônio de fogo chamado Calcifer.
Quando o verdadeiro poder da magia de Howl é
revelado, e seu relacionamento com Sophie se aprofunda, nossa jovem heroína de
cabelos grisalhos se vê lutando para protegê-los de uma perigosa guerra de
feitiçaria que ameaça seu mundo.
Tonari no Totoro と な り の ト ト ロ - Meu vizinho Totoro
Satsuki e Mei, duas pequenas irmãs, mudam-se
com o pai para uma nova casa no interior, enquanto a mãe se recupera de uma
doença em um hospital próximo. Para surpresa das duas, a mais nova logo
descobre que elas compartilham sua casa com algumas criaturas bem incomuns –
guardiões das florestas, e um dos quais é o amado Totoro. Quando problemas
aparecem, seus novos amigos as ajudam a redescobrir a esperança.

de anime. Uma obra-prima vencedora de Oscar, A Viagem de Chihiro, do gênio
Miyazaki.
A
Viagem de Chihiro é uma fantasia extraordinária sobre uma jovem garota, chamada
Chihiro, que descobre um mundo secreto de espíritos estranhos, criaturas e
feitiçaria. Quando seus pais são misteriosamente transformados enquanto comem
em uma praça muito suspeita e bastante abandonada cheia de barracas de comida,
ela é forçada a recorrer à coragem que ela nunca pensou ter para se libertar e
retornar com sua família para o mundo fora dessa fantasia.
Hotaru no haka: 火垂るの墓 –
Túmulo de Vagalumes.
Este conto infausto de guerra e perda da
inocência é contado nas cinzas de um atentado da Segunda Guerra Mundial, quando
dois irmãos órfãos, Seita e Setsugo, lutam para sobreviver no interior do
Japão. A animação mostra através de uma perspectiva muito delicada e comovente
baseada na história semi-biográfica de Akiyuiki Nosaka (escritor famoso que
pertence à "Geração das Cinzas" (Yakeato Sedai)), como a indiferença
dos próprios compatriotas é ainda mais vil do que os ataques inimigos,
especialmente quando se trata daqueles que estão em maior necessidade, as
crianças. A fome, o flagelo e o desespero que eles passam chegam a nos deixar
descrentes com o mundo em que vivemos.
Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta 天空 の 城 ラ ピ ュ タ - Laputa: Castelo no Céu
Uma aeronave transportando Sheeta, uma garota
que foi sequestrada pelo agente do governo Muska, é atacada pelo capitão Dola e
seus filhos piratas que estão em busca do amuleto de cristal de Sheeta. No
decorrer da luta, Sheeta cai da aeronave, mas sua descida é alentada por um
misterioso poder de dentro do amuleto. Ela pousa em segurança em uma pequena
cidade mineira onde um garoto chamado Pazu a encontra e a leva para sua casa
para se recuperar. Pazu conta sobre uma misteriosa ilha flutuante chamada
Laputa, que aparece em uma foto tirada por seu pai. E é assim que essa aventura
começa, claramente inspirada em As Viagens de Gulliver, a “primeira”
produção de Ghibli, merece sua atenção.
