Michael Alger has taught Spanish for 10 years and the
idea of teaching Portuguese came up after he got back from Brazil. Where he
lived for 3 years. As every language, there are some barriers when you start
teaching a foreign language. Which are the barriers? How to break down them?
What is the importance of learning Portuguese as a second language nowadays?
What is the student’s motivation to learn Portuguese as a foreign language?
“Some of the language barriers are the conjugations of
verbs as well as the sounds of the letters (especially words that include a
tilde on the vowels!)
A good way to
break these barriers is to relate them to Spanish, (which they already study),
as well as take a look some funny-sounding English words that people use in
Brazil. This makes them see that Brazilians also have difficulty pronouncing
some English words, so it's a good way to take the pressure off of the
students.
It's important to learn Portuguese especially in our
state (Massachusetts) because it is the 3rd most-spoken language here (English
and Spanish are 1st and 2nd, respectively). The Portuguese came here in the 50s
and 60s, and the Brazilian wave of immigration began in the late 90s. There are
many cities that have a heavy Brazilian population, such as Somerville,
Framingham, and Everett.
The motivation is simple-for us; Brazilian culture is
something "cool" that a lot of people appreciate. Lots of people can
easily recognize ‘Cristo Redentor’, pictures of Rio, and Gisele Bundchen. Most
people here also believe that Brazilians are very
beautiful people, and we love Havaianas!” – Said Michel Alger.

Brasil. Onde ele morou por 3 anos. Como toda língua, existem algumas barreiras
quando você começa a ensinar uma língua estrangeira. Quais são as barreiras?
Como quebrá-las? Qual a importância de aprender o português como segunda língua
hoje em dia? Qual é a motivação do aluno para aprender português como língua
estrangeira?
“Algumas das barreiras são as
conjugações dos verbos, assim como os sons das letras (especialmente palavras
que incluem um til nas vogais!)
Uma boa maneira de romper essas barreiras é
relacioná-las ao espanhol (que eles já estudam), além de dar uma olhada em
algumas palavras inglesas engraçadas que as pessoas usam no Brasil. Isso os faz
entender que os brasileiros também têm dificuldades em pronunciar algumas
palavras em inglês, então é uma boa maneira de tirar a pressão dos alunos.
É importante aprender
português, especialmente em nosso estado (Massachusetts), porque é a terceira
língua mais falada aqui (Inglês e Espanhol são primeira e segunda,
respectivamente). Os portugueses imigraram nos anos 50 e 60, e a onda
brasileira de imigração começou no final dos anos 90. Há muitas cidades que têm
uma população brasileira expressiva como Somerville, Framingham e Everett.
Uma motivação é simples, para
nós, a cultura brasileira é algo "legal" que muita gente aprecia.
Muitas pessoas podem reconhecer facilmente o Cristo Redentor, fotos do Rio e
Gisele Bundchen. A maioria das pessoas aqui também acham os brasileiros um povo
muito bonito e nós amamos as Havaianas! ”- diz Michel Alger.
